On Wednesday 15 July, our casual French Lab meeting comes back in webinar format : AFTER LAB!

On this occasion, Jimmy Stef, a Ph.D. student in Sociology at the CNRS will come and give a speech on the internationalisation of higher education.

The internationalization of higher education is a global phenomenon that is today in all government policy agendas and all the strategies of world-class universities around the world. Student mobility has thus exponentially developed towards countries historically recognized as forming international students and talents, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and France. Yet countries in Southeast Asia, in particular, Singapore and Malaysia, are developing intense strategies to attract and appear like education-importing countries and to establish themselves as global centres of excellence. How are these new players positioned in this ultra-competitive international education market? This race to attract students and the dissemination of educational models has not it become a deep geopolitical, geostrategic and economic stake of the states? We will focus in this discussion, from the example of Singaporean higher education.

Jimmy Stef is a Ph.D. student in Sociology at the CNRS. He is currently a member of two French research laboratories: The Research Unit ‘Migrations and Society’ (URMIS) at the University of Paris and the University Cote d’Azur, and the Research Institute of Contemporary Southeast Asia (IRASEC) at Bangkok, Thailand. He prepares a thesis untitled “The internationalization of higher education in Southeast Asia. Between transnational education, privatization and making of local and international elites: the case of Singapore and Malaysia” (since 2018).
