Past Event | Managing a Multigenerational Workforce

The FCCS recently hosted Managing a Multigenerational Workforce, bringing together professionals to discuss how organisations can foster collaboration and understanding across generations.
The event explored practical strategies to improve communication, support knowledge sharing and build more inclusive workplaces where employees of all ages can thrive together.
Key Learnings:
- Lead the individual, not the generation
Avoid broad assumptions about Gen Z or senior employees. Effective leadership means adapting your style to the person in front of you and leading with trust, clarity and empathy. - Bridge differences through communication and shared purpose
Generational gaps are often less significant than assumed, but technology, lifestyle and expectations have amplified differences. Building connections, communicating openly, assuming good intent and creating a shared goal can help prevent misunderstandings and conflict. - Connection requires more intentional leadership
Small-group conversations, regular check-ins and “stay interviews” can help managers better understand what employees value, what keeps them engaged and where expectations may be misaligned. A strong sense of belonging and purpose remains critical across generations. - Rethink what drives commitment and career progression
Salary alone is not enough to retain talent. Different generations may place greater value on mobility, titles, development opportunities, flexibility or meaningful work. At the same time, leaders need to manage expectations around the pace of progression and build resilience for navigating challenges. The future of work requires both tech fluency and experience
AI is rapidly changing roles and ways of working, but a younger, tech-savvy workforce does not replace experience. Organisations need to support employees of all generations in learning new skills, reducing technology-related biases and combining digital capabilities with institutional knowledge, judgement and experience.
