Past Event | Artificial Intelligence in the Legal Industry: Opportunities and Challenges

The rapidly evolving legal AI landscape, the opportunities unlocked by emerging technologies, and the governance challenges associated with their responsible adoption were at the heart of our latest In-House Counsel Club session.
Led by Lucas Nicolet-Serra,K&L Gates Straits Law LLC, the discussion provided valuable insights into how legal professionals can balance innovation, efficiency, and risk management as AI continues to reshape the legal industry.
Key Takeaways:
▪️ The legal AI market is evolving at pace, with a clear and ongoing battle between general legal AI tools and specialised legal AI tools, while agentic AI is emerging as a particularly disruptive next step in automating end-to-end legal workflows.
▪️ The benefits of AI usage are already tangible, notably significant productivity gains, more sophisticated and iterative decision-making processes – which is ultimately our work, and the potential of AI tools to materially expand access to justice.
▪️ The risks of AI remain material and must not be underestimated, in particular hallucinations and confidentiality concerns, which are especially acute in a regulated legal environment.
▪️ Strong governance will be critical, including structured training on prompting, the implementation of robust AI frameworks, and maintaining a strict human-in-the-loop approach for all meaningful legal outputs.
A warm thank you to Lucas Nicolet-Serra and the team at K&L Gates Straits Law LLC for leading this insightful session, and to all participants for their engagement and contributions to the discussion.
