Past Event | Future of Green Shipping: Navigating the New Energy Mix

The French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore recently organised in partnership with Aon“Future of Green Shipping: Navigating the New Energy Mix,” convening experts from Aon, Bureau Veritas and InterContinental Energy to explore how the maritime industry can transition towards net zero while maintaining competitiveness and reliability.

Speakers highlighted the magnitude of the challenge: today, around 96% of the global fleet still runs on fossil fuels and only a small share uses alternatives such as green ammonia, green methanol, LNG or biofuels. Each option comes with its own trade-offs in terms of safety, energy density, infrastructure readiness, cost and scalability. There is no “silver bullet” solution, instead, a portfolio of solutions will be needed, supported by clear regulations, robust carbon targets and mechanisms to address the “green premium” so that the cost remains manageable and well spread across value chains.

A strong interest in nuclear energy for shipping also emerged from the discussion. Recent years have seen a rise in nuclear maritime initiatives, with pilot nuclear-powered vessels and power-ship projects expected by 2040 and a potential deployment on international waters around 2045. To unlock this potential, the industry will need long-term regulatory visibility, rigorous safety frameworks and a shift in public perception, overcoming the legacy of nuclear’s military origins.

Throughout the session, panellists underlined the importance of planning ahead, forging partnerships across governments, technology providers, financiers and end-users, and securing firm offtake commitments to make green projects bankable. Regulation must provide both “stick and carrot” to accelerate investment and deployment at scale.
