Past Event | Navigating the Skies of 2045: Can Aviation Grow Sustainably?

In the latest session of the ESSEC EMBA – FCCS Leadership Series, moderated by Julien Salanave, Academic Director of the ESSEC & Mannheim EMBA Asia Pacific, the main topic was around the future of aviation and how the industry can manage rapid passenger traffic growth—expected to double by 2045—while tackling decarbonisation and scaling sustainable solutions.

The conversation featured two distinguished industry leaders:

  • David Dufrenois, ASEAN Regional Delegate & CEO, Safran Singapore
  • Thomas Mouveaux, General Manager APAC, Thales AGS – Aviation Global Services

Together, they examined the long-term transformation of the aviation sector, exploring the intersection of traffic growth, decarbonisation pathways, and the practical realities of scaling sustainable technologies.

Both speakers emphasized that while innovation is accelerating, the real challenge lies in deployment at scale. Achieving meaningful impact will require coordinated efforts across manufacturers, operators, governments, and technology providers, along with bold leadership ready to make investments that may only mature decades from now.

The discussion also shed light on the balancing act facing today’s aviation leaders: ensuring safety and reliability, meeting rising passenger demand, and advancing environmental commitments—all amid shifting regulations, competitive pressures, and evolving public expectations.

Ultimately, the session underscored a central takeaway: the future of aviation will be defined by the industry’s ability to grow sustainably—and the decisions made today will determine whether that future is both viable and resilient.
