Past Event | Resilient Autonomy: Cybersecurity for Smart Maritime Systems

The French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore recently hosted a rich and forward-looking discussion on cyber resilience in smart maritime systems, exploring how digital transformation and automation are reshaping the industry’s approach to security and autonomy.
A warm thank-you to our speakers and moderator:
- Brian Koh, Director – NUS Enterprise
- Prof. Zhou Jianying, Professor of Cybersecurity & Center Director – iTrust / SUTD
- Nalla Anandakumar, Principal Security Engineer – Brightsight (SGS)
- Julien Metayer, Global Client Manager – Maersk
- Moderated by Romain Gagliardi, Managing Director – Wavestone
The session shed light on the growing complexity of digital ship systems and the corresponding rise in cyber-risk exposure, from navigation and communication to propulsion and satellite networks. Across all interventions, one message stood out: cybersecurity must be built in, not added on.
Speakers showcased tangible approaches to resilience:
- Maersk presented its industry-leading cyber defense operations and continuous threat intelligence monitoring.
- Brightsight (SGS) emphasized the critical role of hardware security, including secure boot, tamper resistance, and supply-chain integrity.
- SUTD introduced the MariOT shipboard testbed, supporting the development of international cyber-risk management guidelines for autonomous vessels.
- NUS Enterprise highlighted the need for a strong innovation ecosystem through its Port Innovation Ecosystem Reimagined (PIER71), fostering collaboration between corporates, researchers, and start-ups.
Both Professor Zhou and Brian Koh concluded by opening the door to future collaboration opportunities with FCCS members, reinforcing Singapore and France collaboration in maritime innovation and resilience.
The takeaway: ensuring the safety and competitiveness of tomorrow’s maritime industry will depend on collective intelligence, trusted partnerships, and secure-by-design innovation.
