Past Event | The Telco's Role in Smart Cities: 5G/6G in Action

Throwback on our latest Smart Cities committee meeting, “The Telco's Role in Smart Cities” which provided a strategic overview of the future urban environment. Featuring speakers Sander Veraar - StarHub, Lancine Dosso - ENGIE and Eliam-Jay Bendavid from Streamwide, the discussion highlighted the essential role of next-generation telecommunications and data-driven solutions in building resilient, responsive cities:
Technology & Investment Imperatives: Networks must move beyond raw bandwidth to become a utility-grade platform delivering the ultra-low latency and reliability necessary for critical systems to safely optimize energy consumption, supporting goals like the Singapore Green Plan 2030.
Data, Interoperability, and Trust: The main technical hurdle for Edge Computing is standardizing the vast, proprietary real-time data from city sensors to achieve city-wide interoperability for functions like smart traffic. Decentralized 5G/Edge processing requires a coordinated zero-trust security model to protect sensitive citizen data and maintain public trust.
Integrated Resilience: Achieving net-zero targets demands more than efficiency; it requires driving behavioral change by using platforms to deliver personalized, actionable sustainability insights to citizens. Integrated solutions, exemplified by the Punggol Digital District/ENGIE District Cooling System, are highly effective, demonstrating an up to 30% reduction in energy consumption.
