Singapore awards new hydrogen-ready power generation contract to Tuas Power

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has awarded Tuas Power Generation the right to build, own and operate a new combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant. With a capacity of 670 megawatts (MW), the unit is scheduled to begin operations in December 2031 and will be able to meet the annual electricity consumption of around 1.2 million four-room HDB households.

The award is part of the centralised process launched by the EMA in April 2026 to secure new generation capacity as demand rises sharply. The authority projects peak demand to grow by 2.4% to 4.8% a year over the next ten years, reaching between 9.6 and 11.4 gigawatts (GW) by 2031. This growth is driven by economic expansion, the electrification of transport and the development of energy-intensive sectors such as semiconductor manufacturing and data centres.

The plant will be designed to run on hydrogen, in line with Singapore's decarbonisation strategy. EMA Chief Executive Puah Kok Keong stressed the importance of planning capacity ahead of time to support the growth of energy-intensive sectors, and welcomed the industry's engagement in the request-for-proposal process.
