Singapore to serve as world’s first airport testbed for CFM rise open fan engine technologies

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), CFM International, and Airbus have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish Singapore as the world’s first airport testing ground for CFM’s next-generation Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines (RISE) technologies, with a focus on the Open Fan engine architecture.

Signed at the third Changi Aviation Summit, the agreement brings together the regulator, engine manufacturer, and airframer to study the impact of Open Fan and other RISE programme technologies on airport operations. The initiative aims to develop a comprehensive readiness framework that will serve as a global blueprint for aircraft manufacturers, airports, and airlines as the industry prepares for next-generation propulsion systems.

The MoU was signed by Han Kok Juan, Director-General of CAAS; David Dufrenois, Chief Executive Officer of Safran Singapore, on behalf of CFM International; andRémi Maillard, Executive Vice-President of Engineering for Airbus’ Commercial Aircraft business and Head of Technology.

CFM’s RISE programme is a technology demonstration effort focused on advancing future commercial aircraft engine technologies, including the Open Fan architecture, which removes the traditional engine casing to allow for a larger fan diameter and reduced aerodynamic drag. The programme targets more than 20% improvement in fuel efficiency compared with today’s in-service commercial engines, while also aiming to lower emissions and noise and ensure compatibility with future hybrid-electric systems.
