Decathlon Singapore 7K run: a race accessible to more than 3000 runners

Decathlon’s mission of making sports accessible has been exemplified in their inaugural race. Everyone was invited to be part of this race, including the visually impaired.

4 August 2019 - Over 3,000 runners were flagged off at Decathlon Singapore Lab this morning for the inaugural Decathlon x Get Active! SG 7K race. With the aim of making the race accessible to many, this race had three categories - 7K Men, 7K Women and 7K Pair.

Decathlon Singapore managing director Nils Swolkien said: "Being part of GetActive! Singapore is a logical consequence of the vision we share with Sport Singapore. With the 7km race, we hope to demonstrate how fun and accessible running can be.”

Decathlon’s first ever race introduced shared tags where participants were able to complete the race as a pair. The categories encouraged people of all ages and fitness levels to run their first race, be it for leisure or to beat personal records. Each participant of the race were gifted a generous race pack containing Decathlon products - a bag, shirt, towel and other accessories.

For the 7K Competitive Men’s Category, Li Jing Jie finished first with a timing of 30:54min. For the 7K Competitive Women’s Category, Mei Hui Lee ended with a timing of 37:17min. For the inaugural 7K  Pair Competitive, Clement Chow and Wille Loo set the record for the Decathlon Race with a timing of 30:48min, crossing the finishing line together.

The race took place in the heart of sports in Singapore, Stadium Boulevard, with a scenic route along key sports landmarks such as the National Stadium. Additionally, the race was celebrated with a two day sports carnival from the 3rd - 4th of August with a range of sports and fitness programmes. The carnival showcased Decathlon’s huge range of sports products, aligning with their mission of making sports accessible to the many.

Decathlon partnered with RunningHour, by providing race tags for the visually impaired to join the inaugural race. RunningHour is an inclusive running club which promotes the integration of people with special needs through running.

During a SportsSG event, Minister Grace Fu mentioned: "It's great to see this new partnership between Decathlon and SportSG. I hope more companies will be a part of GetActive! Singapore and work with Sport Singapore to promote active lifestyles."
