Past Event – Doing business in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone
Throwback on our latest Asia Committee meeting on Doing business in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).
A warm thank you to our esteemed speakers: Casatrina Lee, Deputy Director Johor-SG Special Economic Zone Programme Office at EDB, Sai Chao Yong, Senior Vice President, Group Foreign Direct Investment Advisory at UOB Bank, Joanne Lee Partner at Deloitte Singapore, and Nicolas Menville, Executive Director, Head of Singapore based Industrial Clients at Colliers - for sharing their invaluable insights on the recent concluded Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone.
Key takeaways from the session included:
- JS-SEZ Formation: Malaysia and Singapore have established the Special Economic Zone to deepen economic partnership and create a new value proposition for global companies.
- Complementary Strengths: The JS-SEZ leverages Johor's abundant resources (land, labor) with Singapore's strengths (innovation, R&D, business ecosystem), promoting a "twinning model" where companies can operate in both locations.
- Targeted Growth: The JS-SEZ targets key sectors like manufacturing, logistics, digital economy, and energy, aiming for 100 projects in 10 years.
- Business Facilitation: The Investment Asia Facilitation Center Johor (IMFEJ) acts as a one-stop shop for businesses, with expedited processes (Johor Superlane) for larger investments.
- Enhanced Connectivity: Initiatives like passport-free QR codes and the upcoming Rapid Transit System (RTS) will significantly improve the movement of people.
- Streamlined Logistics: Paperless cargo clearance and simplified customs permits reduce time and cost for goods movement.
- Attractive Incentives: Malaysia offers JS-SEZ specific incentives, including reduced corporate tax rates (5% for 15 years) and income tax rates for knowledge workers (15% for 10 years).
- Diverse Opportunities: The JS-SEZ offers opportunities for companies establishing a first presence in Southeast Asia, expanding existing Singapore operations, or setting up regional supplier/distribution hubs.
