Past Event | The New Frontier: Exploring Urban Air Mobility's Opportunities and Challenges

Our Aeronautic, Space, Defence and Security Committee has recently held an informative session on The New Frontier: Exploring Urban Air Mobility's Opportunities and Challenges in Singapore. The event welcomed industry experts and explored the potential and real-world hurdles faced by Advanced and Urban Air Mobility (AAM/UAM). With Singapore setting the stage for this forward-looking business, key insights centered around the economic, social, and environmental aspects of urban air mobility (UAM).

A huge thank you to our speakers:

  • Mr. Fabrice Ancey, Co-founder & CCO of Heron Airbridge
  • Dr. Leo Jeoh, Founder and CEO of State Aviation

The session was skilfully moderated by Mr. Paul Tan, Deputy Director of International Centre for Aviation Innovation

Key takeaways:

  • The future of Advanced Air Mobility is electric, integrating heightened levels of automation.
  • While the vision of UAM is promising, current obstacles remain significant, especially around noise pollution, operational visibility, and public safety. These are critical aspects that must be refined for widespread acceptance and smooth integration of UAM into existing urban landscapes.
  • Community Engagement and Preparation: A successful transition to UAM requires extensive community engagement and education. As this transformative technology becomes more visible and integrated into daily life, it’s essential for communities to understand, accept, and feel secure with these new aerial transport options.
  • For public acceptance, the speakers highlighted that affordability and demonstrable environmental benefits are crucial. People need to see not only that UAM is accessible but also that it contributes positively to the environment, further supporting urban sustainability goals.
  • A pivotal aspect of UAM safety is Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM), which must operate with high reliability and redundancy. To prevent service interruptions, especially in densely populated areas, ensuring UTM systems have robust fail-safes is paramount.
