• Title: Singapore is deploying police robots at Changi Airport to conduct patrols and provide on-demand transportation services
Singapore has begun testing a police patrol robot at Terminal 4 of Changi Airport to assist with surveillance and provide officers with a faster means of transportation.
The autonomous robot, named Gibson, is equipped with multiple cameras and sensors that allow it to navigate its environment while avoiding obstacles and people. Developed by the Home Team Science and Technology Agency in collaboration with the A*Star Institute for Infocomm Research, Gibson is currently being tested.
During a media demonstration, Gibson showcased its dual mode operation. In autonomous mode, the robot uses cameras, 3D LiDAR, and Sonar technology to navigate and avoid obstacles. It also has a “safety bubble” that stops the robot and triggers an alarm if someone gets too close.
In ride-hailing mode, Gibson can autonomously travel to an officer's location, improving operational convenience. Police Commissioner Patrick Pang of the airport police division said the robot will complement existing police patrols and improve police visibility at the airport.
Other robots are also deployed at the airport, according to FTN News. Toni, the robotic bartender, serves cocktails in the Lotte Duty Free shops in Terminals 2 and 3. PETER, a police robot that patrols the main entrance to Jewel, issues warnings to drivers who stop for too long.
A reception robot on Level 5 serves snacks and bottled water, while sweeping robots on Level 1 take care of cleaning tasks.
