• Title : Singapore officially recognizes esports as a sport in its own right

On January 14, 2026, the Singapore Parliament passed a legislative amendment officially recognizing esports and mind sports as sports disciplines in their own right. This amendment to the Singapore Sports Council Act now allows the government agency SportSG to fully include esports in its national sports development missions, on an equal footing with traditional disciplines.

This institutional recognition marks an important milestone for the video game and esports ecosystem in Singapore. It paves the way for increased public support, particularly in terms of infrastructure, training programs, talent development, and the organization of structured competitions. The stated goal is to further professionalize the sector while promoting the emergence of sustainable careers in esports.

Beyond the sporting aspect, this decision reflects the growing importance of digital cultural and creative industries in Singapore's economy. Video games and esports are now considered drivers of innovation, international appeal, and value creation, at the intersection of technology, entertainment, and digital culture.

For Singapore, this official recognition is a strategic lever to strengthen its position as a regional hub for esports and gaming in the Asia-Pacific region, attracting publishers, event organizers, technology platforms, and investors within a clear and favorable regulatory framework.
