Past Event | From Pilot Projects to Profit: Unlocking Business Opportunities with Drones

Our Aeronautics, Space, Defence & Security Committee hosted a session bringing together industry leaders to explore how drone technologies are moving beyond experimentation toward scalable and economically viable applications.
The discussion was led by our guest speakers: Fabrice Ancey, COO & Co-Founder, Heron AirBridge, and François Balland, CPO, AIR Lab, Thales.
The session focused on why many drone pilot projects struggle to materialise into sustainable business models. While numerous pilots are technically successful, scaling remains the main challenge. Speakers highlighted key barriers including regulatory complexity, social acceptance, integration with existing infrastructure, and unclear ROI measurement.
A key point emphasised was the need for a robust Unmanned Air Traffic Management (UTM) system to ensure safety, coordination, and large-scale deployment. Beyond regulation, operational integration within companies is essential, with clear governance, measurable value creation, and alignment with core business processes.
Participants shared concrete examples of where drones are already delivering value, particularly in medical delivery, infrastructure, maritime, construction, and security sectors, especially in environments where drones replace high-risk or repetitive manual tasks.
Key takeaways
- Many drone pilots succeed technically but fail to scale due to lack of clear business ownership and measurable ROI.
- Operational integration within organisations is critical to unlock value.
- Safe deployment requires robust unmanned traffic management systems.
- Regulatory frameworks and infrastructure readiness remain key success factors.
- Economic viability emerges where drones address concrete industrial pain points.
