Focus 81 | ENGIE in Southeast Asia and the Power of Collective Action
How is ENGIE driving the energy transition in Southeast Asia, and what are the key initiatives?
At ENGIE, our value stems from being a comprehensive, integrated solutions provider in the region. With end-to-end expertise spanning strategy, financing, design, build, and operations management, we deliver tailored solutions for our client's unique needs. By managing the complexities of energy and sustainability, our clients can focus on their core business.
The synergy within our operations drives our success. Our Centre of Expertise in Singapore unites consulting, investment in innovative startups, and cutting-edge research in energy efficiency and smart technologies. We also provide energy management, procurement solutions, and risk management services.
As a result, in Singapore, our projects have avoided CO2 emissions by around 265,000 tonnes. This is a result of landmark collaborations, such as the JTC Corporation and Singapore Institute of Technology project which is a District Cooling System (DCS) in Punggol Digital District, set to be Singapore's first largest mixed-use smart business park.
In Malaysia, we are contributing to the country's goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. So far, we have saved 84,000 tonnes of CO2 through projects like the Sunway South Quay District Cooling System and the 100MW Kerian Solar Project.
In the Philippines, we support the government's goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030. Our partnership with the Filinvest Group has resulted in the country's largest brownfield district cooling system at Northgate Cyberzone, expected to achieve 61.7% energy savings over 20 years.
What role do partnerships play in ENGIE’s strategy for Southeast Asia, and how have collaborations with local companies contributed to regional sustainability?
Southeast Asia has a deep-rooted culture of mutual support, embodied in concepts like "bayanihan" in the Philippines, "kampung spirit" in Singapore, and “Satu Malaysia”. This collective spirit of action is central to our strategy in the region, much like the “esprit d'entraide” in French culture.
In business, this means forging strong, long-term partnerships. Our collaborations in Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines have helped avoid around 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions – equivalent to planting 6.5 million trees.
Our partnership with FairPrice Group, one of Singapore’s largest retailers, include 4.05 MWp (megawatt peak) of green energy and a 10-year build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) agreement to optimise their cooling systems, enough to cool over 700 four-room HDB flats. In Malaysia, our 2013 investment in Megajana's partnership with Cyberview led to an expansion, boosting chilled water capacity to 14,000 RT and stored thermal energy to 95,500 RTh. This improved efficiency by 5%, cutting power use by 2.3 GWh and avoiding 1,160 tonnes of CO2 annually.
With Shangri-La The Fort, Manila, we’ve designed a smart system enabling their engineers to lower its cooling system’s electricity cost and avoid 7,700 tonnes of CO2 emissions over seven years.
With mutual support and our forward-thinking partners, we help Southeast Asia achieve a sustainable future.
