Event report

Past Event | Future of the Maritime Ecosystem: Towards Smart and Autonomous Vessels

Special thanks to our esteemed speakers Mr. Denis Gagneux, Head of Centre of Excellence & CTO at Naval Group Far East, Mr. Anouar Kiassi, Vice President Digital & Information at GAZTRANSPORT & TECHNIGAZ (GTT) and moderator Mr. Francois-Xavier Accard, Managing Director at CMA CGM International Shipping Company for a great session on Future of Maritime Ecosystem: Towards Smart and Autonomous Vessels. Through an interesting panel discussion and Q&A with the audience, the panellists answered the questions including the differences between smart vessels and autonomous vessels, what are the challenges remaining today, and what the operation systems of smart and autonomous vessels would look like in the future.

Highlights and key takeaways of the events:

  • International Maritime Organisation degrees of automation : Degree one – Ship with automated processes and decision support; Degree Two – Remotely controlled ship with seafarers on board; Degree Three – Remotely controlled ship without seafarers on board; Degree Four – Fully autonomous ship.
  • More detailed regulations on autonomous vessels will be finalised by 2028.
  • The benefits of autonomous vessels include:
    • To optimise on board and onshore operations
    • To improve safety, reliability
    • To reduce costs
  • Before we move on to the next step with more experiments and implementation towards smart and autonomous vessels, digitalisation needs to be developed first and vessels need to be more digitalised.

This event is kindly supported by our committee partner CMA CGM.
