Tip Of the Month: Key elements of your eCommerce website

Let's speak friendly digital! Marie Nadal Sharma, Founder & Director of Them You & Me shares tips about demystifying e-commerce website.

A website makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? A website is where customers and partners can find information about your business, learn who you are, what products or services you sell, and how they can contact you. It is your 24/7 presence, so you want to make sure it is the best it can be.

When it comes to website design, what works for one person does not always work for another. A website can be different from another, based on concept, product or service. However, some key elements and basic rules apply to all eCommerce websites and we hope this checklist will make the process easier for you.

When you think of an eCommerce website, usually, the shop page first comes to mind. You are used to seeing the wishlist, search bar, add to cart and multi-currency icons. The product page is at the heart of your strategy because this is where conversion will occur and the customer will complete the purchase.

Below is an initial checklist outlining 12 key elements of an eCommerce website. Use this list as a starting point when planning your new website or revisiting your existing one:

  1. Top banner for special announcements (a must for a Covid statement)
  2. Friendly and intuitive navigation to help visitors find what they are looking for
  3. Easy-to-find categories to assist visitors in narrowing down their search without too many clicks
  4. Attractive product name and detailed product description (colors, fabric, sizes, pictures with various views, videos, etc.)
  5. Return, exchange, refund and shipping policy
  6. Legal requirements: Privacy Policy, Cookie Policy (cookie bar) and Terms and Conditions
  7. Footer with an email sign-up to grow your contacts list and even a pop-up window with x% offer
  8. Homepage with new arrivals and best sellers
  9. Related products (You may also like…)
  10. On brand personalized post-purchase messages (this one’s often forgotten)
  11. Login/create account and guest checkout
  12. Social proof to connect further with your customers

This is just a start, as there are many more aspects. A successful eCommerce website means a flawless and enjoyable experience with filters, clear navigation, an easy-to-access search and an obvious support/help/contact us section. It is also about upselling and cross-selling to make the most of your customers’ visit.

This checklist will help get you started. Email us if you have any questions regarding any of the aforementioned must-have features for your eCommerce website.
