Circonomy and Wild Asia Partner to Launch Malaysia's First Artisan Biochar Network

Wild Asia and Circonomy announce a strategic partnership, aimed at empowering palm oil smallholder farmers in Malaysia to transition towards nature-positive practices. This collaboration is an extension of Wild Asia’s pioneering SPIRAL Programme, which has been working tirelessly to forge alliances across the value chain to grow inclusive, traceable and nature-positive palm oil.

In Malaysia, over 5.8 million hectares are dedicated to oil palm cultivation. Unfortunately, many smallholders struggle with declining yields and farm profitability leading to heavy reliance on expensive fertilizers and agro-chemicals. The soil under conventional oil palm farming is often degraded, with low organic carbon levels, making it challenging for farmers to maintain productivity.

Wild Asia has been at the forefront of innovating low-cost innovative solutions to these challenges, promoting regenerative agriculture that enhances biodiversity, improves soil health, and reduces the need for chemical inputs.

As part of their partnership, they’re committed to supporting the growth of a WAGS Artisanal Biochar Network in Malaysia. They have started with a biochar project that will convert oil palm fronds into #biochar, providing farmers with a natural soil amendment that boosts yields, retains water, and sequesters carbon. The lessons learnt will help them build the confidence to scale-up this approach to other farmers.

Circonomy is supporting this initiative by providing the technology and connecting these efforts to the global carbon market, ensuring full traceability. They’re proud to share that their collaboration has already reached a significant milestone with the endorsement of Wild Asia as C-Sink Manager from Carbon Standards International AG, bringing the project closer to certification.
