Hutchinson develops a new fire-resistant, halogen-free material for battery packs

As the world continues switching over to electric vehicles, battery safety is a major challenge for car manufacturers. Hutchinson is leading the innovation curve with a new EPDM material for effectively sealing battery packs.

This new material is designed for battery pack gaskets and battery cooling circuit seals to prevent the coolant from coming into contact with the cells and stop flames from spreading. It can also be used for electric motor cooling applications and battery peripheral equipment.

Harnessing their expertise in formulating innovative elastomer products, this new EPDM material conforms to UL 94 V-0, which is the most stringent level of fire resistance. It guarantees an improved seal, better chemical compatibility and excellent low-temperature performance. In addition, it has the upside of being halogen-free, which not only makes it safer but also more sustainable than other materials.

This material also heralds prospects for demanding industrial and aeronautical applications. Hutchinson is sending out a clear signal of its expertise and its commitment to promote a safer form of mobility offering greater sustainability.
