Interview with Rebecca Assice, Virtual Room

What is your background?

After 13 years as a management consultant, I set up a network of escape rooms across Australia and NZ. In 2017, I then opened two world first virtual reality experiences in both Singapore and Sydney

A few words about your business

Virtual Room is the world’s best team-based virtual reality experience. Designed and developed in France, the experience has blown people away and is already #1 in the Fun & Games category on Trip Advisor in Singapore. In teams of 2 to 4 people you have to communicate, collaborate and solve challenges together in a totally realistic virtual world – including places like ancient Egypt and the moon landing.

Why did you set up your business in Singapore?

Being based in Singapore already it made sense to explore the opportunity here. I also felt Singaporeans would love the concept – it’s innovative, uses leading edge technology, can be played with friends and family and people are always looking for new activities to try here. There are also a huge number of businesses here looking for fun, unique and engaging team bonding experiences.

What was the most difficult challenge to overcome on your entrepreneurial journey?

Growing awareness of a concept that hasn’t existed before. People don’t even know to search for virtual reality as a team based experience as it never existed until last year.

What are the next steps for your company?

We will launch our new game as well as a Mandarin version of the experience in the next month or so. After that, definitely keen to expand around the Asia Pacific region.

A few tips for new entrepreneurs?

Be very clear why you are getting into business in the first place – is it because you want to follow your passion and work in the business full-time? Or do you want to earn a passive income to support your lifestyle? If it’s the latter, be sure to understand the economics of your business and whether it can provide a sustainable income for you with limited effort.

Your motto in life?

Life is for living, loving and experiencing – not for working

Your business motto?

The best business is where you can work when you want and where you want
