Past Event | Investing in Carbon Capture Infrastructure and Nature-based Solutions

The French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore had the privilege of hosting a panel discussion on Investing in Carbon Capture Infrastructure and Nature-based Solutions. It was an insightful and interactive discussion that raised awareness and shed light on the importance of the initiatives (CCUS, NbS) in combating climate change and fostering sustainability.

We would like to extend our gratitude to our speakers: Dr. Magdalena Kwiecien, Market & Strategy Development Manager APAC, Sales & Business Development at Air Liquide;  Mr. Antoine Raes, Investment Director, Natural Capital at Mirova and our moderator Mr. Hugo Virag, Managing Director, Co-Head APAC at Astris Finance and Co-president of the Energy and Infrastructure Committee at the French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore.

Key Takeaways:

  1. We are all aware of the consequences of CO2 Emissions on Climate Change. However, there is still a lack of consciousness on the impact of natural loss on climate change.
  2. $11tn investment is needed from 2022 to 2050 in the natural environment to slow rising temperatures and to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
  3. Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) implementation has historically fallen short of anticipated levels, but momentum has been gained in recent years. However, even with this progress, CCUS deployment would still fall considerably short of what is necessary in the Net Zero Scenario.
  4. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can increase carbon storage and/or avoid GHG emissions and are an important tool within a company’s commitment to having Net Zero emissions.
  5. Most NbS, if effectively implemented, offer a wide range of ecosystem services, including water filtration, flood buffering, soil health, and biodiversity habitat. IUCN2estimates these benefits at $170 billion.
  6. Carbon removal and carbon avoidance are both essential to generating net carbon impacts.
